In 1950, preceding the formalization of "artificial intelligence" terminology, pioneering mathematician Alan Turing recognized the profound difficulty of formulating a satisfactory intelligence definition. Instead of creating a formal characterization, he proposed the "Imitation Game"—later known as the Turing test—whereby a machine would be considered intelligent if human judges couldn't reliably distinguish it from humans during text-based conversations.
